Hockey
When Bryan Jones of Temiskaming, Quebec, laced up his skates in Chatham in 1957 he changed the face of hockey at St. Thomas. Although he was also a gifted football player, it was his work on the ice that earned him a spot on the “wall,” both as an individual and a member of the 1960- 61 Maritime Championship team.
Best known as captain of the championship team, “Johnny-on-the-spot” Jones was a flashy forward who had a knack for being able to come up with a big goal. On March 4, 1959, he scored a hat trick which landed STU its first NB-PEI championship in nine years. That same year, Jones was the league’s top scorer, a Maritime hockey champion, a team MVP and STU’s male athlete of the year.
