All-star varsity athletes, teams and coaches, and even a ‘Flying Father’ are among those named to the first class of inductees to the new STU Tommies Sports Wall of Fame.
“Athletics has always been a big part of campus life at St. Thomas University,” said president and vice chancellor Dennis Cochrane. “From its earliest days as a small academy on the Miramichi, young men were playing sports under the name of St. Thomas. It is fitting that we have chosen our centenary year to remember and celebrate the athletes who called themselves Tommies,” he added.
“The timing couldn’t be better to launch this honour,” said athletics director and selection committee member Mike Eagles. “Honouring those legendary Tommies from the past is not only the right thing to do, it creates a strong bond between our current student athletes and those who competed in the ‘green and gold’ in years’ past.”
Eagles added that the selection committee sought and received many nominations, but decided to honour the Chatham athletes in this first class of inductees. It also wanted to use the annual Lou Chabot Memorial Game and the 20th anniversary of the death of one of the most beloved hockey Tommies to announce the first inductees. The first formal induction ceremony took place during Homecoming Weekend, July 2010.
