What is Promise of Home?
Promise of Home is a community-based narrative research project exploring newcomer experiences of belonging in Fredericton. The project began in 2019 by collecting stories—personal narratives—from recently immigrated high school students and immigrant families. During phase three, the project provided opportunities for local residents and community members to reflect on the stories collected in the first two phases. Now, in its fourth and final phase, the stories and community feedback gathered throughout the project are being used to develop policy recommendations. The ultimate goal of Promise of Home is to make Fredericton a more welcoming and inclusive city where both newcomers and long-term residents feel at home.

Who’s involved in Promise of Home?
Promise of Home consists of a team that organizes the project and participants who choose to share their stories as storytellers. The project is led by Dr. Gül Çalışkan, a sociology professor at St. Thomas University. Her current team includes Dr. Sophie Lavoie from the University of New Brunswick, student research assistants, and members of the immigrant community. The participants are local newcomers and immigrants who have chosen to tell their stories.
