Alex Neve, Secretary General with Amnesty International
The 25th anniversary of the Dr. Bernie Vigod Memorial Lecture in Human Rights will take place on November 4, 6:00-7:00 PM, at the Ted Daigle Auditorium in Edmund Casey Hall. This year’s distinguished speaker will be Mr. Alex Neve, secretary general of Amnesty International Canada. His lecture is titled: “Human Rights Advocacy at Amnesty International Canada.”
“It is an honour for the Atlantic Human Rights Centre to welcome Alex Neve to deliver the Vigod Lecture. We are looking forward to hearing updates on Amnesty International’s ongoing campaigns Stop Torture, No More Stolen Sisters and Open for Justice,” said Dr. Christina Szurlej, professor in the Human Rights Program and director of the Atlantic Human Rights Centre.
“Having participated in Amnesty International missions to fourteen countries and appeared before Canadian parliamentary committees and numerous UN human rights monitoring bodies, Neve will provide a valuable insider’s perspective into human rights advocacy.”
Neve has attended the Summit of the Americas and the G8 Summit and has participated in missions to South Sudan, Côte d’Ivoïre, Tanzania, Ghana, Mexico, Burundi, Chad, Colombia, Guinea, Honduras, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Guantánamo Bay and Grassy Narrows, Ontario. He’s appeared before numerous Canadian parliamentary committees, as well as various United Nations and inter-American human rights bodies.
He is the chair of the board of directors of the Canadian Centre for International Justice and a member of the board of directors of Partnership Africa Canada and the Centre for Law and Democracy. Neve holds a bachelor of laws from Dalhousie and an LLM in international human rights law from the University of Essex. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2007.
A panel discussion (7:00 pm – 8:00 pm) and reception (8:00 pm – 9:00 pm) will follow the lecture.
